Celebrate June 2017 with Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture

Each year to celebrate June is Recreation and Parks Month in Orillia, various special events and programs are planned locally.

Recreation and Parks Month is a national movement designed to:

  • Increase awareness about the benefits and importance of recreation and parks.
  • Encourage citizens to become more active and engaged in their communities.

The Charter for Recreation and Parks in Ontario states that everyone has the right to quality, accessible and inclusive recreation and parks services in their communities, and the Recreation and Parks theme - Live it Everday! - promotes and supports that vision.

There are many other events throughout the month that are free and designed to keep your family active.

There will be four pucks hidden - one each week of the month. Each day of the week, Monday through Friday, a new clue about where a puck is hiding will be released marked with the hashtag #OPRCScavengerHunt. Each Monday marks the start of a new set of clues for the next puck. If you find one of the hidden treasures, bring it into the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at the City Centre and receive a PRC prize pack worth a total of $100!

Geocaching Close-Up

Geocache Hunt

There are millions of geocaches hidden around the world, just waiting for you to find them - including over 30 in Orillia! Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game that can be played using your smartphone. Starting June 1, Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture is introducing nine new Geocaching sites to the area. All you need is two feet, a heartbeat and a GPS (or the app!)

Get it on Google Play     Download on the App Store

Step 1: Create a Free Geocaching Account.

Explore, find and log geocaches around the world. You can also get access to more tools to make geocaching even better with a Geocaching Premium membership.

Step 2: Find a Geocache

Use Geocaching.com or the official Geocaching® apps for iPhone and Android (links above) to pick a geocache and navigate to its location. Geocaching adventures can take you to new vantage points, down scenic roads and into long-forgotten forests. You'll search through both new parks and familiar neighbourhoods. The adventure is in the journey, but the real thrill can begin when you close in on the coordinates.

The exact appearance of the container you're looking for is often a mystery. The geocache page will usually tell you the size of the geocache. Some geocache containers are easier to find than others...

There are hundreds of variations on geocache shapes, from obvious (camouflage coloured boxes or capsules) to whimsical (think a small yard gnome in the woods) to devious (think of a fake security camera attached by magnets to the side of a building).

The most interesting geocache containers are often the ones you've never encountered before and likely will never see again. Keep your eyes and your mind open when you're geocaching. Geocaches will never be buried but you can find them hanging in trees, hidden in logs, etc. If you're stuck, geocache pages often include helpful hints. Previous logs and pictures can also offer clues to find the geocache.

Step 3: Share your Experience

Once you find it, sign and date the logbook, re-hide the geocache exactly how you found it, and share your experience online.

Water Smart Day

Come out with the kids on June 24 to Water Smart Day at Couchiching Beach! No registration is required for this event. Orillia Parks, Recreation and Culture and local partners will join forces for a carnival-themed day. Designed to educate the community about drowning prevention strategies, residents will enjoy water safety presentations, educational videos, handouts and lifeguard demonstrations. There will also be free games, face painting and more!
