Georgian College Unveils New Facility

The Orillia campus of Georgian College officially unveiled its new Community Education Partnership Centre before a gathering of faculty, students and interested community leaders Tuesday.
The dedicated facility within the campus will provide students in the Community Projects Initiative (CPI) an area to develop projects in conjunction with community agencies and non-profit groups throughout Simcoe County.

Atlas Block’s industrial property is moving closer to becoming a residential neighbourhood.
“We currently have a site plan approval application before us for the first 55 townhouses,” Orillia’s senior planner, Andrea Woodrow, said recently.
Titan Homes is planning the construction of 120 apartment units in the form of eight-storey buildings, 178 townhouses and future commercial space.

Over the past five years, thanks to funding from the Ministry of Education, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has pumped almost $45-million into the local economy as it aggressively updated and upgraded its presence in Orillia.

The Sunshine City will host three sports during the 2014 Ontario Winter Games.Orillia will partner with communities from Muskoka to host the annual event that will feature 28 sports and more than 2,300 athletes. “It is the largest multi-sport games in the province, said Paul Barnetson, sport program supervisor.The event runs from Feb 27 to March 2, 2014. “Tentatively, the sports that the city have been asked to host are figure skating, curling and wheelchair curling,” said Barnetson....

Five months after Portuguese Olympian Francis Obikwelu tore his quad, it still hadn’t begun to heal.
