Council approves 2016 budget with future growth in mind

Orillia Council passed a 2016 budget with an anticipated blended increase of 2.9% that focuses on infrastructure needs throughout the City and planning for future development. This means an increase of approximately $8.18 a month (approximately $98 a year) for residents with an average home assessment value of $250,000.

Mayor Steve Clarke presented two local charities with $2,973 in children’s toys collected through the 10th annual Toys for Tickets campaign.
Representatives from the local chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and North Simcoe Victim Crisis Services were presented the toys donated by members of the community in lieu of paying parking tickets in the Mayor’s office Monday morning.

The owner of 66 Pearl Dr. in Orillia is facing smoke alarm related charges under the Ontario Fire Code after a tenant’s careless use of a candle caused a fire in late November.
“Candles can create a peaceful ambiance, but that can quickly change. A candle is an open flame and if left unattended or ignored can become a serious fire hazard. Candles are a major cause of house fires in Ontario,” said Jeff Kirk, Orillia Deputy Fire Chief.

Task force examining youth homelessness in Orillia

A citizen task force, created by the Orillia Youth Opportunities Committee (OYOC), is taking a closer look at youth homelessness in the Orillia area in an effort to better understand the issue and help find a solution.
