Martiuk resigns effective March 21, 2014

On Friday Feb. 21, 2014 City of Orillia Chief Administrative Officer, Roman Martiuk, tendered his resignation following a closed session meeting of Council and will be retiring effective March 21, 2014.

Greening Orillia’s apartments and condominiums

Apartments and condominiums in the City of Orillia have successfully gone green.
On Sept. 1, 2013, all 48 apartments and condominiums on the City’s garbage bin service were required to offer green bin collection to their tenants if they wanted to maintain City garbage collection. At the beginning of the apartment program, the setout rate of green bins was approximately 45 per cent based on setout data provided by Mid Ontario Disposal. This rate has since increased to 60 per cent.

Meeuwisse named Orillia’s Athlete of the Year

Sixteen-year-old mountain bike and cross-country ski phenomenon, Soren Meeuwisse (MAY-WIS-SA), was named Orillia’s 2013 Athlete of the Year at tonight’s Council meeting.
“I’d like to thank my nominator, my family for their support and my coaches Kevin Simms and Ron Howden,” said Meeuwisse after being presented the award.

Committee seeking Orillia Hall of Fame nominations

The City of Orillia Commemorative Awards Committee is seeking nominees for induction into Orillia’s Hall of Fame. Deadline for submitting a nominee is Friday Feb. 28, 2014.
Since 1964, Orillia has inducted more than 40 noteworthy residents into its Hall of Fame, including Gordon Lightfoot, Arthur Shilling, Pete McGarvey and more. Inductees range from the arts, music and literary community, the field of sports, industry and commerce, medicine, philanthropy and politics.

2013 Athlete of the Year to be announced at Council

One of five nominees will be named the City of Orillia’s 2013 Athlete of the Year at the Monday, Feb. 10 meeting of Council at 7 p.m.
The Athlete of the Year trophy is presented annually to a local athlete who best represents individual ability, dedication to training schedule and good sportsmanship. First awarded in 1952, the trophy has since been handed out 53 times to 52 different Orillia athletes.
