Registration is now open for Culture Days 2014.

Keep drains, swales and storm water inlets clear

The focus of Public Works staff this week has been patrolling and identifying potential drainage issues in anticipation of the predicted rainfall this weekend. Daily monitoring has identified a number of ditches and culverts that have since been cleared. Clearing drainage paths to catch basins has been ongoing.

The City of Orillia is inviting residents to join millions around the world in turning off their lights for one hour in support of Earth Hour on Saturday March 29 at 8:30 p.m.
Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, organized by the World Wildlife Fund. The Earth Hour initiative began as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has since grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide.

Small-scale clearing on former Atlas Block site

Some small-scale clearing (shrub removal) is occurring on the former Atlas Block Site, with some larger trees scheduled for removal on Friday March 28 under the supervision of an arborist. The Phase 1 Development Agreement, which was executed by the CAO on March 6, 2014, permits the development of 55 townhouses on a private condominium roadway system on the former Atlas Block site. The construction of roads and underground services can now commence.

Orillia hosting first Zero Waste Conference

Orillia’s first Zero Waste Conference on Aug. 10 and 11 will promote accelerated waste solutions and share successful waste-diversion strategies.
The one-day forum and evening gala at the Lakehead University Orillia campus is being organized by the City of Orillia’s Waste and Environmental Management Advisory Committee. The conference will feature speakers and panel discussions, as well as small group plenary sessions with various government and business leaders and institutional organizations.
