The City of Orillia’s Downtown Tomorrow Plan has won an Award of Merit for Planning Excellence from the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP).

Throughout the summer months particularly around special events like Labour Day, many families like to enjoy firework displays. However, family fireworks in the City of Orillia are regulated by Chapter 938 of the City of Orillia's Municipal Code. That means it is illegal to use consumer or family-friendly fireworks such as:
- Showers
- Fountains
- Golden Rain
- Roman Candles
