Former Atlas Block site Getting New Life

The former Atlas Block property is closer to becoming the site of residential and commercial developments.
The property's present zoning is "restricted industrial."
Titan Homes is looking to rezone the 9.5-acre property in three different ways to allow for the construction of 120 apartment units in the form of eight-storey buildings, 178 townhouses and future commercial uses.

A condominium development planned for the site of the former Atlas Block manufacturing plant is a sign of Orillia's thriving construction industry, according to the Orillia and District Construction Association (ODCA).
In the zoning and draft-plan approval stage, the proposed 177-unit, 9.5-acre site is one of a few planned projects that point to healthy growth in housing development for the upcoming year, said Joe Emmons, a director with the ODCA.

Highly skilled tradespeople are a hot commodity in the Orillia area, local manufacturers say.
"We've got orders booked out until the end of the year right now," David Smith, operations manager with Oro Design and Manufacturing, said Thursday. “Our problem is we need to get more employees in to speed up how fast we’re building.”
