Art contest winner unveiled

Posted on Thursday January 22, 2015

For immediate release (January 22, 2015) – The City of Orillia is pleased to announce that Emma Kitchen, 10, from Regent Park Public School, has been selected as the winner of the Imagine Orillia! Youth Art Contest.

The contest, which invited elementary and secondary students throughout the community to share input on the City’s Branding Project, received 35 submissions. Kitchen’s drawing depicted a city park with children enjoying swings and slides.  A caption written in French, and translated by her teacher Elizabeth Rolston, reads, “for me Orillia is special because of all our great parks”.

“Emma’s artwork of her enjoying a city park with her friends is not only creative, it’s also great feedback for the City’s Branding project,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Emma is a budding artist.”

Kitchen, who participated in the art contest along with her grade five classmates, enjoyed being able to take part in the branding process.

“The assignment helped them make the connection that, yes, they are citizens and what they have to say matters in and outside of our classroom,” said Rolston. “Looking to our students to help brand the city was a great idea. It brings new light to a discussion that has been going on in Orillia for a long time.”

Youth art submissions identified many areas of importance, including recreation, sunshine, natural landscapes, caring community members, the Farmers’ Market, arts, culture, events and even cleanliness and safety.

The artwork will complement existing research and feedback that has been gathered through public workshops held this past fall and over 450 surveys completed during the summer of 2014.

A preliminary review of background research, which includes key themes moving into the design stage, has recently been posted on the project website. A presentation to Council outlining branding framework options is expected to take place in early February, with a final presentation expected in spring of 2015.
