Mayor announces recipients of Downtown Tomorrow Grants

Posted on Monday March 20, 2017

Five projects in downtown Orillia received a financial boost today thanks to the City of Orillia’s Downtown Tomorrow Community Improvement Plan (DTCIP).

Mayor Steve Clarke announced approximately $60,000 in funding as part of the first intake of the DTCIP Grant Program launched in January 2017. The program includes financial incentives designed to stimulate development in the City’s core.

“The Downtown Tomorrow Grant Program allows businesses in the core of our city to undertake projects that they may not have otherwise been able to fund,” said Mayor Clarke. “Council is making a number of strategic investments in the downtown waterfront area and we want to help small businesses do the same. Working together with our local businesses will result in a stronger, more vibrant downtown that will ultimately attract new residents, visitors and businesses to the area.”

The first five recipients of the DTCIP Grant Program are:

162 Mississaga St. E. - $24,050
Renovations required to facilitate a new micro-brewery
Façade improvements, flooring, wastewater treatment analysis and design

27 Mississaga St. E. - $20,570
Rehabilitation of a unit previously used for the Marvel Beauty School

“The Economic Development Department is extremely pleased that the first intake of the DTCIP program is able to support such a diverse range of projects,” said Laura Thompson, Manager of Real Estate and Commercial Development. “We look forward to assisting other businesses with their development plans over the course of the next two program intakes.”

There is approximately $125,000 in DTCIP grant funding remaining for 2017. The second intake deadline is April 30, 2017, and the third intake deadline is October 31, 2017. Pre-consultations with the City’s Economic Development Department are mandatory and businesses are encouraged to apply to the earliest possible intake as funds are limited for this competitive program.
