Centennial Park Boat Launch and Parking Area - Final Design Plan
The Centennial Park Boat Launch Area Design Working Group included; Councilors Lauer, Hehn, Kloostra and Cipolla, as well as the General Manager of Development Services and Engineering, and the Manager of Park Planning and Development. The group consulted with staff, the design team, and area stakeholders to evaluate the proposed boat launch parking area redesign in regards to location, functionality, safety, size, configuration, operational parameters and how it integrates with existing surrounding uses.
Existing Parking Lot
The existing parking lot includes flexible parking space that can accommodate 108 vehicle parking spaces, or 54 vehicle plus trailer spaces. The existing parking lot includes a one-way driving layout and accommodates the boat launch, the waterfront trail and boardwalk, plus parking islands to be planted with full size shade trees.
The Centennial Park Boat Launch and Parking Area Working Group made recommendations for the development of a final design plan for necessary upgrades and improvements at the Centennial Park Boat Launch and Parking Area.
Proposed Parking Lot
The realignment of Centennial Drive along this section of the City’s waterfront necessitates a redesign and renovation for the Centennial Park Boat Launch and Parking Area. At the completion of the Centennial Drive realignment there will be an additional 49 on street parking spaces on the west side of Centennial Drive and the iconic French’s Stand area will become internal to the waterfront park. The new parkland configuration in this area creates opportunity for additional resting and picnic areas in close proximity to the boat launch and waterfront. Other specific improvements include:
- Flexible parking space layout that can accommodate up to 81 vehicle parking spaces, or up to 19 vehicle plus boat trailer parking spaces along with 43 vehicle parking spaces
- Including the new on street parking spaces there will be a total of 130 parking spaces
- Allows trailer parking if City determines necessary
- Dedicated driveway for vendors accessibility and deliveries
- Traffic island separates vendor space and seating area
- Separate seating area is provided for picnic and relaxation
- Landscaped traffic islands to promote traffic flow
- Car parking area allows for best possible lake views
- Boat trailer layby to allow Boaters to prepare and stand by
- Boat launch made more efficient with layby
- Handicap parking spaces provided
- Crosswalk line painting for boardwalk and multi-use walkway
- Pedestrian walkways south and north of parking lot
- Seating and shade close to boardwalk and boat launch
- Waterfront Trail connectivity provided through area
- Elevated boardwalk patio with accessible ramps and stairs
- Safety improvements include limiting cars from being able to enter into the launch area
- Pedestrian safety improvements in the boat launch area
