EAC Tree Projects
EAC has been actively engaged in a variety of Tree Projects to help preserve and enhance the City's overall tree canopy.
The mandate of the Environmental Advisory Committee is to identify and advise on local environmental matters which contribute to a healthy natural environment focusing on the protection and sustainability of our air, land and water resources within the City of Orillia. This shall include, but not be limited to, Orillia’s aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (e.g. the lakes, their tributaries and shore lands, wetlands, forested lands and developed lands).
Also, for the purposes of satisfying Section 8 of the Planning Act, the Environmental Advisory Committee serves as a planning advisory committee with respect to providing comments on planning policy matters.
The terms of reference include:
(a) conducting research and providing advice to Council Committee regarding environmental policies, development proposals, and any environmental matters that are from time to time referred to the Committee by Council;
(b) developing information and promoting public education to protect and enhance the local environment as authorized by Council;
(c) initiating and implementing environmental projects as authorized by Council; and,
(d) providing comments on municipally-initiated planning matters as requested by the Director of Development Services.

2019 Tree Giveaway |
In 2019 Council authorized the EAC to purchase saplings and to coordinate a program to residents and property owners to plant the young maples on private property. A total of approximately 130 trees were planted in a variety of locations across the City. The green dots shown on the map indicate a location where a tree was planted. The program was offered at no cost to the property owner. See the distribution map here. |
