Whether you’re part of a peloton or a lone rider, finding the perfect balance between well-groomed cycling trails along with breathtaking scenery and amenities is a must. The Orillia area is a well-known and favoured destination for cyclists with both paved and natural trails running alongside the waterfront and through historic neighbourhoods of the city. If you're brand new to cycling the Sunshine City's trail systems, here are a few trail tips and locations to get you started!
The Lightfoot Trail network
Part of the Trans Canada Trail system, The Lightfoot Trail is a 15 kilometre dual trail network which connects to the Uhthoff Trail in the north, the Oro-Medonte Rail Trail in the south-west, and the Ramara Trail in the east.
The trail incorporates both granular and asphalted trail sections. The existing linear asphalt trail system through Orillia is referred to as the Millennium Trail, whereas the remaining separate asphalt trail spurs and granular trails are referred to as the Lightfoot Trail, a tribute to folk icon and Orillia native, Gordon Lightfoot. Popular for its level terrain and scenic views, the Millennium Trail stretches for nine-kilometres across the spectacular shorelines of Lake Couchiching, through major parks such as J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park, Centennial Park and Couchiching Beach Park.
Points of interest
For a unique glimpse into Orillia's past, follow along from the northernmost point of The Lightfoot Trail as it merges with the Millennium Trail to the east to discover all of the City's 14 heritage signs along the way. These interpretive signs detail notable moments from Orillia's history and are a great companion to the free mobile Millennium Trail tour.
Along the way, you'll pass by several of the City's main attractions, including historic sites, public art installations, and Downtown Orillia; where a variety of restaurants, shops, and galleries await. Eastward, a detour along the Lightfoot Trail will bring you the Leacock Museum National Historic Site, where the famed literary figure Stephen Leacock's waterfront grounds are open for free exploration. Further east, you'll come across J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park, home to the Golden Leaves statues in tribute to the late Gordon Lightfoot.
Following the Lightfoot Trail southwest will bring cyclers past additional highlights, including the state-of-the-art Orillia Recreation Centre on West St. S. and the Ontario Provincial Police Museum off of Memorial Avenue. Continuing on will lead you to the northern entrance of the Oro-Medonte Rail Trail.
