Regional Profile

Orillia is surrounded by three Townships - Oro-Medonte to the southwest, Severn to the north, and Ramara to the east - bringing the population of the area to 70,000. The three Townships make up the northern section of Simcoe County, which includes 16 semi-rural municipalities radiating around Lake Simcoe from the Holland Marsh to the Severn River and Georgian Bay.

The County of Simcoe and partnering municipalities have produced a publication outlining the many benefits of living, working and playing in Central Ontario. Click on the photo, left, to link to an online version of the publication.

One of the fastest-growing regions in Ontario, Simcoe County attracts residents looking for lifestyle options and industry seeking opportunity for growth and a qualified workforce. The Cities of Orillia and Barrie are separate politically and financially, but integrated economically and geographically as part of Simcoe County.

With a population of 265,000, Simcoe County boasts many advantages:

  • Excellent regional health care and educational institutions.
  • A vibrant industrial/commercial base.
  • Quick and easy access to the Greater Toronto Area via Highways 400 and 12, offering access to a marketplace of more than 130 million customers within a day's drive.
  • Natural beauty. The region is a prime tourist destination offering 500 kilometres (311 miles) of shoreline, top-flight golf courses, scenic bike trails, numerous downhill and cross-country ski resorts and abundant trails (including 31,000 acres of county forests), attracting eight million visitors annually, who contribute more than $570 million to its economy.
  • A diverse economic base. The region's flagship industry is Honda of Canada Manufacturing, established in Alliston in 1986. As well as automotive assembly, there is everything from plastics and glass manufacturing to pharmaceuticals and aggregate resources.
  • Agricultural lands. The region's heritage is rooted in agriculture and the rich soil continues to supply Ontario's tables today. Agricultural lands extend across the County from the fertile market gardens of the Holland Marsh up through the rolling fields of corn, soybeans and other cash crops to the tracts of pastureland on the rocky northern fringes. Many top-ranked equestrian centres in the area offer training and host competitive events.
