Frequently Asked Questions

 Lost and Found
Please call Lost and Found at 705-326-8300
 Courtesy and Priority Seating
Seating areas at the front of the bus on either side of the aisle are designated for passengers with greater need of a seat such as:

Wheelchair users have priority. Our buses include a designated area to safely accommodate riders using wheelchairs, scooters, walkers and/or other assistive devices.  Passengers using these mobility aids have priority use of this designated area and all other passengers must vacate this area if these patrons require it.

If this area is available, passengers with other needs, such as caregivers travelling with a collapsible stroller, pregnant women and passengers travelling with a collapsible bundle buggy may use this space provided they vacate the space for those passengers identified above.

For the safety of our passengers - and in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, all wheelchairs and scooters must be secured by the bus operator using the securement system. The operator must be able to hook the system to a solid section of the frame of the mobility aid.

Please note that a person with a disability occupying a Priority seat is not required to move for another customer with a disability. Uses of these seats are on a first-come first-serve basis.

 Bags, Backpacks or Large Items

Passengers with bags, backpacks or larger items are asked to be considerate of other passengers. While seated, bags and backpacks should be held on the passenger’s laps or stored underneath the seat if possible. Bags, backpacks or other personal items may not occupy a seat or block aisles and exits.

Strollers, baby sleighs, or portable wheeled carts cannot block the aisle for safety reasons. Passengers with strollers, or baby sleighs are asked to first remove the child from the stroller or sleigh. Then fold up the stroller or baby sleigh and place at the rear of the bus and out of the aisles. The child must be held in parents/caregiver’s arms or seated on the seat. Passengers with portable wheeled carts must place the cart at the rear of the bus. Wagons are not accepted on Orillia Transit.

Bike Policy

Bike Racks are now on the buses!
As part of the 2020 Capital Budget, bicycle racks were approved to be installed on all transit buses this summer.
When can the bike rack be used?

The bike racks are available on all buses and can be used at any time. They can hold two bicycles and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the bike rack is full, the driver may allow bikes on the buses, providing there is enough room; however, it is at the discretion of the driver. A driver may say no with the anticipation of a busy route – depending on the time of the day. Transit rider must hold the bike and ensure that the aisle is accessible to anyone.

Who can use the bike racks?

Anyone can use the bike racks. An adult must supervise riders under the age of twelve. Passengers are responsible for loading and securing the bike to the rack. Orillia Transit is not responsible for damage caused by or to bicycles.

How much does it cost to use the bike racks?
There is no additional cost for using the bike racks, only the regular fare applies.
What size bicycles can be used?
The bike rack is designed to accommodate two conventional bicycles. Bikes must weigh less than 55 lbs (25 kg).
How do I use the bike racks?
  • The bike racks are easy to use and have instruction labels to help. Before you use the bike rack, make sure you read the instructions.
  • Before the bus arrives, remove any items from your bike such as water bottle, bike lock, bags, etc. Wait for the bus on the sidewalk.
  • Alert the bus operator that you want to load or unload your bike. Load/unload from the curb or in front of the bus; never step into oncoming traffic to load/unload your bike.
  • Allow other passengers to unload their bike before loading yours.
  • If there are no other bicycles on the rack, use the space closest to the bus.
 Loading your bike
  1. While holding your bike with one hand, squeeze the handle to release the latch and lower the rack.
  2. Place the wheels in the wheel slots. A label tells where the front wheel goes. Steady the bike and raise the support arm over the front tire as high as it will go, but not over the frame or fender.
  3. You are responsible for properly securing your bike to the rack, please do not chain or lock      your bike to the rack. You may now board the bus.
 Unloading your bike
  1. To unload your bike, raise the support arm off the tire and move it down and out of the way.
  2. Lift your bike from the rack. If the rack is empty, and no one else is waiting to load a bike, fold up the rack until it locks in place.
  3. Carry your bike off the roadway to the sidewalk. Signal to the operator that you are clear of the bus.
 Restrictions
Electric or battery-powered “Two-wheeled scooter style bikes” are not allowed on the bus bike racks or inside the buses.

Electric or battery-powered “single-seated, two-wheeled styles bicycles” are only allowed on the bike rack if they weigh less than 55 lbs (25 kg) and their wheels fit properly in the bike rack. Electric or battery-powered bicycles are not permitted inside the bus.

Three-wheeled bicycles and bicycles equipped with child carriers, trailers, saddlebags or that have mounted equipment on them may obstruct the operator’s sightlines are not permitted on the bus bike racks or inside the bus.

Riders younger than 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult when using a bus bike rack.

Orillia Transit is not responsible for bikes stolen from or damaged on the bus bike rack.

What if I forget my bicycle on the bike rack?

Please call Lost and Found at 705-326-8300 as soon as possible.

 Cycling Safety Tips
  • Wear a bicycle helmet to prevent serious injuries.
  • Leave one metre from parked vehicles – don’t ride in the “door zone”.
  • Always signal your intentions – be visible, predicable and aware.

Orillia Transit Winter Tips

 Plan Extra Time
During periods of heavy snow and ice, buses, like personal vehicles, will sometimes fall behind schedule, but rest assured operators will be working to reach your stop as soon as possible. Take an earlier trip or plan extra time to get home. Buses not only get slowed down by the snow, but also by surrounding traffic.  Allowing for extra time is the best way to get around during winter weather travel.
Boarding in Areas with Ice and Snowbanks
In areas covered with snow and ice, or blocked by a snow bank, please wait at the closest cleared driveway or corner.
  • When possible, try not to stand in the street or wait at the top of a snow bank. Snow and ice in the street or on a snow bank can be slippery and unsafe.
  • When the bus approaches, be aware of the outside mirror, as it extends from the side of the bus.
 Be Careful When Boarding
  • When the bus approaches, wave to the operator to signal the bus to stop.
  • Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before trying to board.
  • For added safety, the bus will stop to leave space between the bus door and a snow bank or snow-covered curb. This allows passengers room to step onto the bus.
  • Melting snow and ice can make bus floors slippery. Make sure to hold handrails when boarding, walking or standing inside the bus.
  • When reaching your destination, the driver will stop at the bus stop or the nearest safe location.
 Additional Riding Tips
  • When riding at night, hold a flashlight so that the driver can see you waiting at a
  • stop.
  • If possible, wear reflective apparel or safety bands on your coat or other clothing.
  • Reflective clothing is always recommended when traveling at night.
  • During poor weather, drivers maintain schedules as traffic and weather conditions allow. If the weather is extreme, buses can fall behind.
 Use Dash Bus Service
  • Dash Service available from December 1 to March 31.
  • Dash Service provides Free and safe travel across bridges from D Dash stops.
  • Dash Service stops are located at Old Barrie Road Bridge, Coldwater Road Bridge and West Street North Bridge.
 Stay Informed
  • Orillia Transit runs during even the most extreme of circumstances. However, on occasion, service may be discontinued or detoured, due to heavy snow and ice. During these rare times, Orillia Transit does its best to keep buses running as long as possible, so everyone is able to get to where they need to go.
  • Contact Orillia Transit's Customer Service at 705-326-8300 for additional information.
