Ontario Building Code |
Ontario's Building Code establishes the standards for the construction of the places where we live and work in every day. The Ontario Building Code first came into effect in 1976 and provides a set of standards which are used for the design and construction of all new buildings as well as for renovations and additions. Other building-related regulations include the Ontario Fire Code and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. The purpose of the Ontario Building Code is to set minimum standards for construction to minimize the risk to the health and safety of the occupants of the building and to provide for barrier-free accessibility into a building and the energy efficiency of that building. |
Provincial Responsibility |
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing of the Province of Ontario is responsible for the development of and the amendments to, the Building Code Act and the Code, which came into effect as a regulation of that Act. |
Municipal Responsibility |
Every municipality in Ontario is given the responsibility for the enforcement of the Building Code Act and the Ontario Building Code. Municipalities appoint a Chief Building Official and inspectors to issue permits and perform inspections. Excerpts are taken from the Ontario Building Officials Association web site. |
