Fire prevention is a key part of the work of the Orillia Fire Department. Fire prevention focuses on:
- Identifying fire and life safety hazards
- Working closely with residents and businesses to help them understand and improve life safety.
It is the responsibility of Orillia's Fire Prevention Division to enforce laws, codes, and standards to effectively and efficiently provide fire and life safety, education, planning, enforcement, and inspection services.
Fire prevention starts with you! We need your help to reduce the risk of unnecessary loss of life or injury and to protect your property.

Public Education
Public education about fire safety is a key mandate of the Orillia Fire Department. Along with many community partners, the Orillia Fire Department provides a variety of programs for all ages. Examples include:
- Kiwanis Fire Safety House - This mobile teaching tool is shared by surrounding municipalities to present fire safety messages to children. This unique structure visits schools and public events to demonstrate many messages about home fire safety including the real-time introduction to a smoke-filled environment.
- The Hazard House - Providing interactive instruction to children is an excellent way to help them recognize day-to-day hazards. The Hazard House is a scale home model that presents dangers to children and allows them to develop solutions.
- Kiwanis Children's Safety Village - A group of dedicated community members joined forces with the Kiwanis Club of Orillia to create Canada's first portable Children's Safety Village. The village travels to local schools and is set up in the school gym for a week of hands-on safety training where the children learn how to live and play safely.
- School Age Program - Each year, fire prevention officers visit schools to speak to students about home and fire safety. Students in Grades 3 to 5 are targeted using the Kiwanis Fire Safety House, the Hazard House and the Kiwanis Children's Safety Village, which help children to develop safety awareness.
- Adult Education - Older and Wiser and Alarmed for Life are examples of public education programs offered by the Orillia Fire Department. Also available are industrial/commercial fire safety and awareness training sessions and educational presentations for clubs, organizations or committees.
The Orillia Fire Prevention Team is available to participate at your event, meeting or industrial training session to help promote safety in the home, community or workplace. For more information, please contact us.
Arson Prevention Program for Children
Children become fascinated with fire at an early age. Although curiosity about fire is natural, playing with fire is dangerous. Playing with fire or setting fires can have devastating results, including the injury or death of the child responsible for the fire. Orillia's Arson Prevention Program for Children brings together fire service and counselling professionals to assist and support families with children and teens (ages 2 to 17). There is no charge for this program.
Contact us if you notice:
- Your child has an extreme interest in fire
- Matches and lighters go missing or are found among your child's belongings
- There are burn marks on household items or your child's possessions
Alarmed for Life
Each spring and continuing throughout the summer, members of the Orillia Fire Department visit residents throughout Orillia promoting smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and home fire safety. This is a great opportunity to ask questions. Printed information is provided during the visit. Remember, working smoke alarms save lives and are required by law on every storey of the home. CO alarms are required adjacent to all sleeping areas where there is a fuel burning appliance and/or an attached garage.
