If your baby is over one year of age, you need to complete a delayed registration of birth. To begin this process, you must first apply for your baby's birth certificate.

Marriages

The City of Orillia issues Marriage Licences on behalf of the Province of Ontario. The City is participating in the Province’s Online Marriage Application Licence program.

The online marriage licence application is being introduced through a phased-in implementation, with province-wide expansion targeted by early 2025.

The City of Orillia does not offer civil marriage ceremonies.  

How to Get a Marriage Licence in Orillia

Step 1: Complete a Marriage Licence Application

• Online: Fill out the online Marriage Licence Application Form.
• In Person: Hard copies of marriage licence application form are available at Orillia City Centre (50 Andrew St. S.), Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
  
  

Step 2: Pick Up Your Marriage Licence In Person (25 - 30 minutes)

The appointment to obtain your marriage licence will take approximately 25 - 30 minutes.  After completing your application, you can obtain your processed marriage licence in the following ways:

• Reserve Your Timeslot in Advance:
  • Online: Book an appointment on the City’s website by filling out the online booking form to guarantee your timeslot.
  • Phone: Call 705-325-1311 to book an appointment.
  • Email: Email councilservices@orillia.ca to book an appointment.
    

• Schedule an Appointment Upon Visit: Visit the Orillia City Centre, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment.

• Drop-In: Drop-ins are welcome at the Orillia City Centre, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. However, availability may vary, and to ensure service at the time of your visit, pre-booking an appointment is recommended.

Marriage Licence Details

• Fee: The 2025 Marriage Licence fee is $166. The fee must be paid either by cash or debit at time of issue.
• Identification: A marriage licence will only be issued to one or both of the applicants. Please note that only one applicant needs to be present to pick up the licence, but they must bring two pieces of ID for each person (totalling four pieces of ID).
• Validity: Marriage licences are valid for 90 days from the date issued. The intended date of marriage must be provided on the application.

Requirements for Marriage Licences

Identification is required when picking up a marriage licence. Both applicants must provide the following:

• Two pieces of original government-issued identification for each person getting married. 
• One piece of identification must include a photo. Photocopies are not acceptable.
• Examples of government-issued identification include:
  • Valid Passport
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Valid Ontario Photo Card
  • Birth Certificate (with any change of name certificates)
  • Record of Immigrant Landing
  • Permanent Residence Card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • There are no residency, medical, or citizenship requirements.

Please note that only one applicant needs to be present to pick up the licence, but they must bring two pieces of ID for each person (totalling four pieces of ID).

Applicants who are widowed:

Applicants who are widowed must provide one of the following three documents during the online application process, if applying in person, or upon pickup if not previously submitted online:

• Death Certificate of spouse 
• Funeral Director's Statement of Death 
• Court order declaring that your spouse had died 

Applicants who have been divorced:

Applicants who have been divorced in Canada must provide at least one of the following three documents during the online application process, if applying in person, or upon pickup if not previously submitted online:

• A certificate of divorce
• The final decree (divorce or annulment)
• The final judgement (divorce or annulment)

Please note that a divorce order issued by a judge is not the same as a certificate of divorce which acts as the proof of divorce. Learn more about the differences and how to obtain a divorce certificate.

Applicants who are aged 16-17:
