 OLT Program Divisions

The OLT program is divided into Bronze, Silver, Gold Division each split based on 2 age groups 7-11years old and 12-16 years old. OLT’s top division is for High Performance Development (HPD) individuals. See below for description, try-out standards and schedule information.

Bronze Division

This is a great introduction to FUNdamental foundations in Lifesaving Sport, which involves learning lifesaving skills through training in a competitive setting. Athletes in this group develop fitness and swimming skills, including stroke correction, endurance and interval strength capacity. Lifesaving Sport is a great way to bridge the gap between swimming lessons and leadership courses while also developing stronger swimming abilities, staying fit and having fun. This group participates in one hour of practice per week with a coach responsible in assisting the athlete in meeting their fitness goals.

Silver Division

This group consists of athletes aiming to further develop their skills and speed for competition in Lifesaving Sport after establishing a foundation in our bronze level or equivalent. Athletes in this group have demonstrated the required swimming abilities as well as the motivation to engage and compete at increasing higher levels of competition.

Practices at this level are more challenging and require additional commitment to practice times to better meet the athlete’s goals.

Gold Division

This group consists of athletes looking to perform at the Provincial level of Lifesaving Competitions. Practices at this level are increasingly demanding, focusing on establishing swim racing skills, as well as refinement of technical skills in lifesaving skills, event rules and competitions.

High Performance Division

This group consists of athletes looking to perform at the Provincial level of Lifesaving Competitions. Practices at this level are increasingly demanding, focusing on establishing swim racing skills, as well as refinement of technical skills in lifesaving skills, event rules and competitions.

 Athlete Tryouts

Ready to dive into lifesaving sport with the Orillia Lifesaving Team?

New swimmers must complete a tryout to determine the appropriate division to match their age and skill level prior to registration into the Orillia Lifesaving Team.

At minimum, to tryout, swimmers must:

    • Be 7 years and older
    • Able to complete 50m (2 lengths) of the Orillia Recreation Center Pool or equivalent without stopping in a recognizable stroke (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke).
    • Demonstrate comfort in deep water and some diving and treading skills.

Other skills may be assessed by the Head Coach as part of the tryout to further assess capability and readiness of a division, including not limited to dives, flip turns, working with lifesaving equipment, drill and or interval workout demonstrations. Swimmers may be requested to swim more than the minimum 50m in order to demonstrate the above.
