There are two different application forms for sign permit:
- An application form for temporary/portable signs. This includes mobile signs, sandwich board signs, and banners.
- An application for permanent fixed signs. This includes wall, projecting wall, ground and development signs.
Note: an application is not required when applied through the Online Portal
Checklist (instructions to complete the sign permit application and requirements for submission)
A Letter of Authorization is required to be signed by the property owner if it is not the owner applying for the permit. This applies for both permanent and temporary signs.
Downtown Sign Area (DSPA)
Signs erected in the DSPA are required to meet a higher set of standards than those outside the DSPA. The reason for these higher standards is to help achieve a high quality and visually consistent downtown area and ultimately give our downtown a competitive advantage over other municipalities.
Effective January 13, 2025, all sign permit applications will be made directly to the City regardless of whether the proposed sign will be erected within the DSPA, or outside the DSPA. The Board of Management of the Downtown Orillia BIA is no longer involved in any sign permit application process.
MTO Approval:
Please note that if the sign will be located within 400m of a provincial highway (Highway 11 or Highway 12) you may need approval from the MTO. See the map below outlining the MTO area.

If approval is required, you will need to contact the MTO Corridor Management Officer through the Government of Ontario Website.
