Get Up and Be Winter Active!

Winter Active is designed to help Orillians improve their health while having fun enjoying the best of Canada's winter. Bring your household together and participate in as many activities as you can in February. This year we have a variety of free family-friendly events! There is truly something for everyone. Best of all? All events are free!

We are happy to announce that Winter Active will begin February 2, 2022 in accordance with the Province of Ontario reopening guidelines.

Due to current provincial COVID-19 restrictions pre-registration is required for most activities. Please register at Orillia.ca/sun to reserve your spot! Pre-registration for all activities will begin January 31, 2022.

 February 2

PILATES: Join Maja for a free intro to Pilates class! Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movement. Improve your strength, posture and flexibility. ORC Fitness Studio, 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

February 3

SNAP & SHARE SNOW FORT: Challenge your household to a snow fort contest. Share your creative creations online! Hashtag #SnowFortOrillia on Instagram and we will share your creation on our stories.

February 4

SENIORS AT PLAY OPEN HOUSE: Seniors at Play offers recreational programs for those aged 55+ in our community. Visit us in the Orillia Room at Rotary Place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to find out more about how to get involved, try out a new activity, and meet new people. Memberships available for purchase at this time. All are welcome!

February 7

EXPLORE SCOUT VALLEY: Explore the beautiful Scout Valley Loop Trail at Line 15 N and Old Barrie Rd E on your next outdoor walk!

February 8

February 9

SNOWMAN BUILDING CONTEST: Join the movement and send us your best creations of a snowman! To enter the snowman contest:

1. Build a snowman with your household members in your yard.

2. Take a picture of your creation and e-mail it to svanluven@orillia.ca by no later than 8:00 p.m. on February 9, 2022.

3. Photos will be featured on our Facebook Page and the public will be permitted to vote for their favourite until February 16 at 4:30 p.m. The photo with the highest Facebook likes will be the winner!

4. The winner will be announced February 17 at 12:00 p.m. on Facebook.

5. Remember to like and follow your submission and share with your friends and family!

Please follow the below guidelines:

1. Snowman submissions must be suitable for all audiences; the City or Orillia will remove any submissions deemed to be inappropriate at its sole discretion.

2. Snowman picture submissions are considered to be public and will be viewed by the general public.

3. Submission of snowman pictures provides permission to the City to use images for marketing purposes at its sole discretion.

Prizing: 1st prize winners will win a goodie bag full of City of Orillia swag and complimentary passes to the Orillia Recreation Centre!

Closing of the contest is weather dependent so be sure to build your snowman, take pictures and post while there is still snow on the ground, and the weather is cold.

VALENTINE'S STORY & CRAFT TIME: Participants will listen to a Valentine's story and sing a Valentine's song. Next, parents/guardians will be provided materials and shown how to help their children make a Valentine's themed craft. ORC Multi-Purpose Room, 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

February 12

DANCE CLASS (5-9 years): Come try out some new moves and new dance styles! This class will cover basic dance terminology, steps, and choreography in a variety of styles (including ballet, jazz and acro). It will help you to improve your balance, flexibility, mobility, and strength all while having fun. ORC Multi-Purpose Room, 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

February 12

DANCE CLASS (10-15 years): Come try out some new moves and new dance styles! This class will cover basic dance terminology, steps, and choreography in a variety of styles (including ballet, jazz and acro). It will help you to improve your balance, flexibility, mobility, and strength all while having fun. ORC Multi-Purpose Room, 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. 

February 14

KARATE: Join Gerry in a free Karate class! At the Orillia Academy of Karate (formerly Orillia YMCA Karate,) we offer traditional martial arts, non-contact! We pride ourselves on being friendly, family-oriented and the perfect choice whether you’re a complete beginner or have trained elsewhere in the past. Children over the age of 10 are welcome. Orillia Room at Rotary Place, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

February 15

ADULT DANCE CLASS: Come try out some new moves and do your workout at the same time! This class will cover basic dance terminology, steps, and choreography for adults or expand on your current dance abilities in ballet, jazz, and dance fitness. It will help you to improve your balance, flexibility, mobility, and strength all while having fun. ORC Multi-purpose Room, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

February 16

SNOW DODGEBALL: Grab your winter gear, warm up your throwing arm, and get ready for a fun game of dodgeball in the snow. Join us for an exciting game of snow dodgeball where players can enjoy a game of school yard dodgeball with a winter twist. This family-friendly event is sure to create fun memories for all. Tudhope Park, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

February 20

SNOW-GA w/ROSANNA: Take your yoga mat outdoors and join us for a Snow-Ga session! You will be guided through an hour-long yoga and mediation class with an experienced instructor. Access to the internet is required for this program. Participants are not required to share their audio or video during the program. Stephen Leacock Museum, 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

February 21

FAMILY DAY CRAFTERNOON: Join us this Family Day for a craft filled afternoon! There will be two, two-hour time slots to choose from. Gather the family and we will see you Monday, February 21st! All supplies are included. Pre-registration is required. ORC Multi-purpose Room, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

FAMILY DAY FREE PUBLIC SKATING: Join us Family Day for FREE public skating. We're offering three sessions: 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Rotary Place (Blue). Pre-registration is required.

February 26

CARDBOARD TOBOGGAN RACE: This very popular activity will once again hit the slopes. Get creative with the design of your toboggan and don't forget to challenge your neighbours, friends or co-workers to come up with a better design then yours. Entries may be made as individuals or as a team, and all toboggans must be made primarily out of cardboard. Additional items may be used on the underside of the toboggan; however a traditional sled may not be attached (i.e. using a crazy carpet as the base). Acceptable materials include: duct tape, tin foil, shower curtains, garbage bags, etc. If you are uncertain if the material is acceptable, contact the Recreation and Youth Division for more information at 705-325-4386. Please note you must register one of your team members for this activity. Prizes will be available. Couchiching Golf Course Hill, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
