Have your say: complete the survey and enter to win a waste reduction prize pack valued at approximately $200.

For immediate release (February 13, 2026) – The City of Orillia is inviting feedback from residents and visitors by kicking off an update to its five-year Waste Minimization Plan. Consultation runs from February 13 to March 14, 2026, and includes an online survey and two separate public open house sessions. Community input will help shape strategies for waste reduction, recycling and education programs.

“Reducing waste and using our resources more wisely is essential to building a sustainable and climate-resilient community,” said Don McIsaac, Mayor of Orillia. “This plan will help guide our actions over the next five years, and we welcome local voices as we create solutions that work for Orillia now and into the future.”

How residents can participate

Survey – share ideas and priorities through an online survey Orillia.ca/WasteSurvey. The survey will also be available at the Open House events.

Project webpage – learn more about the Waste Minimization Plan, project timelines and engagement opportunities at Orillia.ca/WMP.

In-person Open Houses – attend one of two convenient drop-in style sessions to see display boards and speak directly with City staff, Orillia Waste Management Advisory Committee members, and the City’s consultant.

  • Feb. 25, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Orillia Recreation Centre
  • March 7, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Orillia Public Library

Following the consultation period and review of public feedback, the updated Waste Minimization Plan is expected to be provided to Council later this spring, then submitted to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).

For more information about the current plan, ways to participate and timelines of the project, visit Orillia.ca/WMP.

###

About the City of Orillia Waste Minimization Plan: The City’s Waste Diversion Site, located on Kitchener Street in Orillia, operates under Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) consolidated Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) number 5204-B4RRK2. Condition 11.2 of the ECA requires the City to develop a five-year waste minimization plan and implementation strategy every five years. The 2026-2031 update will replace the City’s current five-year plan.
