With snow and ice just around the corner, the City of Orillia is ready for Old Man Winter.
“Through our winter control program, the City’s goal is to keep our roads and sidewalks clear, so people can get to their destination safely,” said Mayor Angelo Orsi. “Being prepared with the proper equipment, and along with our dedicated staff, the City will strive to deliver this much needed service promptly and efficiently.”
The City’s Public Works Department is responsible for clearing approximately 168 km of roads, 120 km of sidewalks, 34 signalized intersections, 19 parking lots and five bridges. The City’s fleet of 23 winter vehicles/equipment is well maintained and fully operational for the winter season ahead.
“The Public Works Department is ready to the take on whatever winter has to offer this year, but we need the co-operation of our residents and visitors,” said Bryan Stewart, Manager of Public Works Operation. “Nothing slows down the work of our plows and sanders more than parked cars, so we kindly ask that people adhere to the City’s overnight parking restrictions.”
In order to make snow removal more efficient, the City asks residents to be mindful of the following:
- Starting Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 until April 15, 2014, please do not park vehicles on City streets, sidewalks, boulevards and parking lots between midnight and 7 a.m. (By-law 2007-55). Vehicles impeding road and sidewalk snow clearing operations can be ticketed and/or towed.
- During winter storms, move all vehicles from the roadway. Keeping parked vehicles off the street and sidewalks will speed up snow removal and increase community safety.
- Do not park at the end of your driveway or over the sidewalk.
- Be patient. In the case of heavy snowfall it could take longer to clear all streets.
The City’s winter control protocol calls for “priority roads” to be cleared first. These are arterial and collector roads used to travel in and out of the city, to business areas, and to medical facilities. City transit routes are also considered in the first-round of snow removal. Residential roads are cleared after the priority roads. This ensures basic access for emergency vehicles and that large traffic volumes can travel safely.
More information about the winter control policy can be found in the attached backgrounder.
