Have your say on whether backyard hens (chickens) should be allowed to roost in backyards throughout the City of Orillia.
Members of the public are invited to attend a public open house to provide input on whether backyard hens should be permitted within City limits for the purpose of household egg production. The open house will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Orillia City Centre, 50 Andrew St. S.
For those who are unable to attend the open house, an online survey is available at orillia.ca/haveyoursay until May 1, 2016.

In March 2016, Orillia Council directed staff to hold an open house to obtain public input on the matter following inquiries from residents interested in keeping backyard hens. Staff will report back to Council Committee by May 30 with the results of the open house meeting.
In order to permit backyard hens in Orillia, amendments to the City’s Zoning By-law and Exotic Animal By-law would be required. An additional by-law may also be required in order to establish rules and regulations regarding the keeping of backyard hens within City limits.
The open house on April 27 is an opportunity for Orillia residents to provide their opinions on whether backyard hens should be permitted within the City, and if so, what rules and regulations should be established (such as a minimum lot size, requirement for fully enclosed coops, disposal of waste, etc.).
