For immediate release (March 26, 2015) – Council has rescheduled a training session related to the Code of Conduct to April 13, 2015, to ensure the presentation and discussion which occurs is available to the community.
“The decision to move the meeting to open session, during a regularly scheduled televised meeting further demonstrates Council’s commitment to transparency,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Council understands the value of strong communication and wants to ensure the information shared with Council is available to the entire community.”
The Special Council Committee meeting regarding the Code of Conduct training was originally scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, in closed session. The Municipal Act outlines limited options whereby Council may hold meetings in closed session, one of which is for the purpose of holding training sessions.
Upon commencing the meeting and through discussions with the City’s Integrity Commissioner, members of Council unanimously expressed a desire to open the meeting to the public which is permitted within the City’s procedural by-law. To ensure the presentation was widely available, Council opted to pursue a meeting date and time which would allow the discussion to be televised for greater transparency.
The meeting was subsequently rescheduled to the regularly scheduled Council Committee meeting on April 13, beginning at 7 p.m.
“Information that is good for Council is good for the community,” said Clarke.
The Code of Conduct presentation will be available within the April 13 Council Committee agenda package.
