The Orillia Manufacturers’ Association (OMA) and Orillia District Construction Association are teaming up to promote local careers in the trades.
The ‘Explore the Trades’ event will take place Tuesday May 27th at OD/Park Secondary School and will showcase over 25 local employers. Additional event partners include the City of Orillia Economic Development Office and the Township of Oro-Medonte.
“There are so many exciting careers in skilled trades in our area that youth should know about,” said Stephanie Stanton, President of the OMA. “Just this year Ed Konda of Ontario Car Kits custom built a car for the new Robocop movie, and Paradigm Precision manufactures Rolls-Royce jet engine parts used throughout the world. Most people don’t know these types of careers are available locally.”
The event will strive to allow students a hands-on look at the types of careers in the trades available locally. Participating employers cover the three major specialty programs offered in local secondary schools, which include construction, manufacturing and automotive. Leaders from industries like Orser Technical, Kubota, R&F Construction, Georgian College, Monteith Building Group and more will be on hand to speak with student and parents. Grade 8 and secondary students will be touring the event from 10am-3pm. The afternoon portion will be opened up to all students, parents, and the general public who want to see what types of careers are available locally in the trades.
“I’m proud to be a part of the Explore the Trades event,” said Justin Rich, owner of Orillia Tool & C.N.C. “When I was in high school at Twin Lakes I heard about an apprenticeship opportunity in grade 10. I seized the occasion, have had a great 13 year career in CNC machining and am now my own boss. This event will allow even more students to pursue the same opportunities that I received.”
“This is such a unique opportunity for students and parents to see what’s available in our area,” said Stanton. “They can talk to employers, see what the trades are really all about and, hopefully, start planning a really rewarding career path.”
