The City of Orillia would like to thank everyone who attended Tuesday night’s public information session regarding the City’s potential investment opportunity with Hydro One.
With such a large turnout, the City quickly shifted formats from the planned open house to a panel discussion and question and answer session with members of the City’s transition team, Hydro One representatives, and Orillia Power Corporation executives in the Council Chamber.
For those who could not attend in person, or who left before the City transitioned into the Council Chamber, visit http://orillia.ca/techhub where information storyboards from the session are currently available and frequently asked questions will be posted in the coming week.
“We want to make sure that everyone who is looking for information about the City’s investment opportunity with Hydro One can get it,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Because we are currently in negotiations with Hydro One to bring the best possible deal to Orillia, some information is still unavailable, but we are committed to being as open and transparent as possible with the information we can share.”
For those without access to the internet and who want more information, please contact Jennifer Ruff, Manager of Communications, at 705-325-8929 or jruff@orillia.ca.
The Jan. 12 information session covered topics such as hydro rates, billing, customer service, potential economic benefits and Council’s negotiating principles. The information session followed Council’s announcement in late September that the City was entering into negotiations with Hydro One on the potential of an Advanced Technology Hub being constructed on a large portion of the Horne Business Park in West Orillia. As part of the discussions, Hydro One is negotiating the purchase of the Orillia Power Distribution Corporation, a subsidiary of the Orillia Power Corporation. The City will not sell the generation assets of Orillia Power.
Since the announcement, members of the City’s Hydro One transition team and City Council have been negotiating a potential deal with Hydro One that could result in $200-300 million in near-term economic impact from the construction of the technology hub, and a significant number of highly-skilled jobs coming to Orillia.
Negotiations will continue between the City and Hydro One. The City anticipates more information being available on a potential deal in the spring.
The City of Orillia is a city of 31,000 people in the heart of Ontario’s Lake Country on the shores of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Visit our website at orillia.ca.
