During a one-week special battery collection from March 10 to 14, 2014, the City of Orillia recycled more than 675 kg of used household batteries. This represents more than 50 per cent of all the spent batteries collected at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot in 2013 (by volume).
“I’d like to thank each and every household who took part in the City’s first special battery collection,” said Mayor Angelo Orsi. “Environmental stewardship is a priority of this Council and together with our engaged residents we can work towards a cleaner, greener City.”
“Staff was very pleased with the level of participation we had from residents during this first curbside battery collection event,” said Andrew Schell, the City’s Director of Environmental Services. “Keeping corrosive products, like batteries, out of our landfill is extremely important in protecting the environment.”
From March 10 to 14, City of Orillia residents were asked to place their spent household batteries in a sealed, clear plastic bag on top of their recycling box for paper on their regular collection day. The amount of batteries collected during the week is summarized below:
Monday, March 10
145 kg / 138 litres
Tuesday, March 11
170 kg/ 184 litres
Wednesday, March 12
84 kg / 92 litres
Thursday, March 13
118 kg / 138 litres
Friday, March 14
158 kg / 184 litres
TOTAL: 675 kg / 736 litres
The next curbside battery collection event is scheduled for Nov. 3 to 7, 2014 – the week following daylight savings ending.
“WEMAC is extremely impressed with the success of Orillia’s first battery collection event,” said Brian Mawdsley, Chair of the City’s Waste and Environmental Management Advisory Committee. “I look forward to the program’s continued success in the future.”
