For immediate release (April 16, 2015) – The City of Orillia is proud to host world renowned author, innovative thinker, and TED Talks speaker, Don Tapscott, at the Orillia Opera House on Tuesday, May 5 for a free community presentation.
“Council could not be more excited to host this event, featuring visionary speaker Don Tapscott,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Don spent his formative years in Orillia, and we’re proud to welcome him home for what’s sure to be an inspiring community experience.”
Tapscott, one of the world’s leading authorities on innovation, media and the economic and social impact of technology, spent his teenage years living in Orillia, and has gone on to become a well-known speaker throughout the province and across Canada.
The presentation is anticipated to touch upon his philosophies surrounding collaborative communities, open and transparent government and the digital evolution’s impact on all facets of life. Tapscott’s appearance will appeal to a broad audience, including entrepreneurs, business leaders, the municipal sector, community organizations, educators and changemakers. Council expects a full house.
“Orillia is truly honored to have the unique opportunity to hear Don share his vision,” said Clarke. “Orillia is full of trailblazers and aspiring leaders, and I have no doubt that this presentation will stimulate new, exciting and innovative projects within the community.”
Tapscott has offered to speak to his hometown crowd as a fundraiser in support of the “Building Hope” initiative, which is a collaboration of a number of community organizations, which are working to establish a new center comprising a men’s shelter, women’s shelter and new location for the Sharing Place food bank. Admission will be free. Attendees must register online and are encouraged to donate to the “Building Hope” initiative at the venue.
Tapscott has authored 15 books, including the 1992 best seller Paradigm Shift and his 1994 hit The Digital Economy, which changed thinking around the world about the transformational nature of the Internet.
The Don Tapscott presentation will take place on Tuesday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Orillia Opera House. To register for this event, visit orillia.ca/tapscottinorillia
