More than half of the 35 individuals who attended last week’s free training session at the Orillia City Centre were employed in the solar industry within a few days. Due to this success, a second free training workshop is scheduled for Thursday Sept. 5, 2013, from noon to 2 p.m. in Council Chambers.
“The rate of hiring following the last solar project training is very encouraging,” said Dan Landry, Manager of Economic Development for the City of Orillia. “Orillia is fortunate to have a strong labour force both within the City and in the surrounding areas, and we’re happy to see the Carpenters’ Union providing these types of training opportunities. Anything that better prepares workers for skilled labour opportunities in our area is a benefit to the community.”
The free training session is hosted by the Carpenters’ Union in partnership with PCL Construction and Peri Scaffolding.
“We are currently managing six large scale solar projects in the Orillia, Oro-Medonte and Midhurst area and PCL is a strong supporter of including the local labour force in our projects,” said Clare Francis, Health, Safety and Environment Manager for PCL. “We’ve been fortunate to partner with the Carpenters’ Union in preparing local workers with this valuable training opportunity.”
Those interested in registering for the free training opportunity can contact Chris Crompton, Field Representative for the Carpenters’ Union, at ccrompton@thecarpentersunion.ca or by calling 705-725-8505.
The City of Orillia Economic Development Office is a division of the Development Services Department dedicated to assisting existing businesses, attracting new business and strengthening the local economy.
