The new Port of Orillia will be a beacon for the future of Orillia, built by Orillians.
Council approved awarding the design-build construction of the new Port of Orillia building to a project team led by Orillia’s Bradanick Construction Services at a cost of $1.997 million. The new Port of Orillia building will be ready to welcome residents and visitors for the 2017 boating season.
“As a Council, we are delighted that a local construction company came to the table with the right players and a winning proposal to deliver a progressive vision for the new Port of Orillia building,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “As a municipality, we must hold a competitive bid process that is open to everyone no matter where they live. Being able to award this type of landmark project that will serve as a calling card for Orillia’s waterfront for decades to come to a local team is a great bonus.”
Jim Storey, President and General Manager of Bradanick Construction Services who has lived in Orillia for more than 40 years, is excited to be part of such a prominent local project that will redefine the City’s waterfront.
“Our team sought to design a solution that not only meets the City’s objectives, but that creates a destination for visitors and residents that will revitalize the downtown, create a dynamic space for year-round enjoyment, and be a beacon for the future of Orillia,” said Storey.
Brook McIlroy Architects, whose recent work includes the award-winning Prince Arthur’s Landing in Thunder Bay, is a heavy-hitter in the world of architecture. Their design proposal best met the City’s functional and operational requirements while added elements, such as a rooftop light feature and the year-round community space that accommodates up to 100 people with views on three sides to the lake, made their design stand out from the rest.
“The building and site design is intended to act as a lighthouse, guiding boaters in the Trent Severn Waterway to Orillia as well as drawing residents and visitors to the waterfront. The building plan has been organized to allow both boater use and the public park patron use to coexist,” said Calvin Brook, Design Principal for Brook McIlroy Architects.
Steenhof Building Services Group of Orillia rounds out the design-build team and will provide structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the project. The new port building has been designed and will be built to LEED Silver standard, however will not go through the certification process. The design will maximize operation through energy efficiency and durability. When the building is not in use, systems can be set so that minimal amounts of energy are being used.
Construction of the new Port of Orillia building will start in September 2016 and is anticipated for completion in May 2017. Orillia Council was faced with determining a replacement plan for the Port of Orillia building when the previous structure was destroyed by arson in December 2014.
