By Tyler Evans, Orillia Matters

There is a new collectibles store in downtown Orillia.

The Cave Collectibles recently opened in the lower level of Becker Shoes at 33 Mississaga St. E.

“We offer an array of various collectibles. Our most popular brands are Pokémon, Star Wars, Magic: The Gathering, Dragon Ball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh! We have all the collectible cards, figures, and plush,” says owner Cameron MacDonald.

“So far things are going really well. We’ve been really busy online and in the store,” MacDonald said.

“People love the atmosphere in our store. It’s an experience when you come into the store and see the collectible things that we do have.”

MacDonald earned a Business Administration degree from Lakehead University, from which he graduated in 2017.

“Going to Lakehead was awesome. It got me a job at Scotiabank as a financial advisor and I was able to save some money to start up this business,” he said.

The Brampton native says attending Lakehead is what brought him to Orillia. The community has kept him here.

“I love this city and the people who live here. On Mississaga Street, we already have a number of collectible stores, and people come from all over Ontario to search out collectibles,” MacDonald explained.

“This is a hub for collectors, so I’ve found Orillia to be an opportune place and this is the right time to open our business.”

MacDonald says his store carries more anime and Pokémon products than some of the surrounding downtown retailers.

“I find that what we carry here was previously lacking, so I think we bring something different and unique to this collectible kind of street,” he said.

“All the stores down here complement each other, and we all specialize in different things.”

MacDonald is hopeful that The Cave Collectibles will be able to grow its online presence over time and become a viable business outside of its physical location.

“We are looking to build out an app for the store, and as we build a relationship with our distributor, we are hoping to start doing pre-sale releases for collectible card games,” he said.

“We also want to build a community presence and help out with our community. We have a lot of kids who come into the store who like Pokémon and we like to hook them up with stickers and things to brighten their day before they leave.”
