ODCA donates building codes to Orillia high schools

For immediate release February 27, 2015 – The Orillia District Construction Association (ODCA) recently donated building codes to area schools, providing costly resources that the construction classes would not otherwise have available.

“When we heard that several area schools were using Building Codes that were many years out of date, the construction association offered to assist,” said ODCA President, Ken Johnston. “It also gave us another opportunity to partner with local schools and promote youth entering the trades.”

Hard copies of the Ontario Building Code cost approximately $175 each, and as such these aren’t always an affordable resource. Building Codes were provided to all three Orillia area high schools.

“The Building Code is ever evolving and it’s important that students understand these changes and how they apply to local industry,” said Johnston. “The ODCA wants to play a role in connecting local students with local industry and we are always looking for contribute in this respect.”

The ODCA works closely with local shop teachers on projects and initiatives that promote careers in the trades. One such initiative is the upcoming Explore the Trades event planned for Tuesday, May 26, at OD/Park Secondary School. The event allows students to learn about local businesses in the trades with hands-on exhibits, and ask local employers questions about various occupations and the paths to enter those careers.

Last year’s event featured approximately 25 local businesses and over 1500 students attended the show. This year’s event will include trades in construction, manufacturing, technology, culinary arts and hairstyling.
