One-hundred solar construction jobs spark additional training

Another local solar construction related training session will take place Nov. 28, 2013, following the success of two previous training events that led to more than 100 jobs. The training session is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Council Chamber at the Orillia City Centre.

“We had a great turn out to the last two training sessions we held, so this time we’ve expanded the session to include WHMIS and fall prevention training so we can really offer the full package,” said Chris Crompton, local representative for the Carpenters’ Union. “We’re happy that we’re able to assist people in finding jobs in everything from rack assembly to skilled positions such as Site Superintendents.”

While solar project construction can be a seasonal activity, Crompton added that hiring continues into winter for solar projects in the area thanks to a newly-secured project site in Oro-Medonte. The Carpenters’ Union is also looking ahead at 10 new projects secured for 2014, half of which are located in the Orillia area.

“Renewable energy is an emerging industry and this training presents an opportunity for local jobseekers to gain skills and experience close to home,” said Dan Landry, Economic Development Manager for the City of Orillia.  “These information sessions can open doors to new career paths for local jobseekers.”

Applicants are encouraged to bring copies of relevant certifications for skills such as heavy equipment. There is no obligation for jobseekers to apply for the jobs they learn about and there is no requirement to join the Carpenters’ Union, unless applicants are hired.
