Expanding programs for older adults in the community

For immediate release (August 15, 2025) – The City of Orillia is pleased to announce its official designation as part of Ontario’s Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) program, a move that will enhance opportunities for older adults in the community to stay active, engaged, and connected.

With funding from the Government of Ontario, the City of Orillia plans to support the transition of the current Seniors at Play program into the newly established Orillia Active Living Centre (OALC). The OALC will be based in the Orillia Room at Rotary Place (100 University Ave.), a hub for community connection and older adult focused programming. The OALC will continue to offer the popular programs that community members already enjoy while expanding to include programs such as: Tai Chi, Ukulele and quarterly bus trips.

“Seniors Active Living Centres are helping to protect the well-being of seniors by providing opportunities for them to stay connected, active and engaged in their communities,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “We are honoured to support the City of Orillia and look forward to seeing the positive impact this centre will have on the lives of local seniors.”

"As the local MPP, I’m proud to see the City of Orillia receive this important funding through the Ontario’s Seniors Active Living Centre program. This investment will help enhance social, recreational, and wellness opportunities for older adults, empowering them to stay active, connected, and healthy, and is another meaningful step by the province in supporting the well-being and quality of life for seniors in our community,” said Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop.

Through the SALC Program the City of Orillia is joining a network of over 300 centres across the province that promote wellness, social interaction, and lifelong learning for seniors. With this addition, Orillia is strengthening its commitment to fostering healthy aging and community engagement for residents.

“We would like to thank our partners at the province for this fantastic opportunity to grow and enhance the recreational and social programs available to Orillia’s older adult community,” said Mayor Don McIsaac. “We are excited to build on the success of our existing programming while introducing new and innovative ways for older adults to stay active, independent, and connected.”

The City of Orillia invites community members to attend an Open House on Oct. 3, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Rotary Place to learn more about the OALC. For the latest updates and program schedules, visit orillia.ca/oalc.
