More than half of the 35 individuals who attended last week’s free training session at the Orillia City Centre were employed in the solar industry within a few days.
Due to that success, a second free training workshop is scheduled for Sept. 5 from noon to 2 p.m. in council chambers.
“The rate of hiring following the last solar-project training is very encouraging,” said Dan Landry, manager of economic development for the City of Orillia. “Orillia is fortunate to have a strong labour force both within the city and in the surrounding areas, and we’re happy to see the Carpenters’ Union providing these types of training opportunities. Anything that better prepares workers for skilled-labour opportunities in our area is a benefit to the community.”
The free training session is hosted by the Carpenters’ Union in partnership with PCL Construction and Peri Scaffolding.
“We are currently managing six large-scale solar projects in the Orillia, Oro-Medonte and Midhurst area and PCL is a strong supporter of including the local labour force in our projects,” said Clare Francis, the company’s health, safety and environment manager. “We’ve been fortunate to partner with the Carpenters’ Union in preparing local workers with this valuable training opportunity.”
Those interested in registering for the next session can contact Chris Crompton, field representative for the Carpenters’ Union, at ccrompton@thecarpentersunion.ca or 705-725-8505.
