The City of Orillia would like to remind residents not to let any unidentified person into their home for a water meter reading.
On Jan. 30, 2014, the City received a report of a man asking to gain entry into a Lakeview Avenue home for a water meter reading. Feeling uncomfortable with providing the man entry, the resident denied the man access to their home. This man was not a City of Orillia employee, nor was he contracted by the City. The City of Orillia reads residential water meters twice a year in the spring and fall.
Almost all homes and businesses in Orillia are equipped with an outside remote touchpad, which provides efficiency and effectiveness in the reading of water meters. Touchpads are located on the outside of a building and enable meter readers to obtain a reading without having to enter a person’s home or business. Approximately 100 homes scattered throughout the City do not have a touchpad, however these homes are currently being equipped with radio devices that allow City staff to obtain reads without entering the home or business.
Residents can verify the identity of a City of Orillia water utility worker by asking to see their identification card or by calling 705-326-1502. Residents are also asked to report any similar incidents to the Orillia OPP.
The City of Orillia is a city of 30,586 people in the heart of Central Ontario on the shores of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Visit our website at orillia.ca.
