Through Your Lens: Visit Orillia Fall Video Contest

Share your creativity! Visit Orillia is excited to launch a video contest highlighting The Sunshine City's most colourful season. 

Orillia and Lake Country residents are invited to submit one original thirty-second video showcasing fall colours and activities in Orillia for a chance to win cash prizes and have their work featured in a Visit Orillia 2025 digital marketing campaign. 

This project explores the opportunity of promoting Orillia in the most authentic way: through its residents. This contest is open to all temporary and permanent residents who wish to develop their digital portfolio.  

What could I win?

Cash prizes are up for grabs for the top three submissions with the highest scoresHere's what you could win! 

  1. First place will receive $3,000 in cash, have their video featured in Visit Orillia's 2025 fall tourism campaign, and receive a featured article published on the Visit Orillia website. 
  2. Second place will receive $1,250 in cash.
  3. Third place will receive $750 in cash.

What do I include?

Submissions must be a maximum of twenty-nine (29) seconds in length, high resolution, and in landscape format (16:9 aspect ratio). All videos must contain original footage that highlights attractions, events, natural beauty, history, and/or unique experiences within the City of Orillia during the fall season. 

Contestants will upload their completed video to a public video hosting website of their choice (such as YouTube or Vimeo) before sharing the link in their contest submission form. 

The fall is a beautiful time in our city, and we want to see what you love about Orillia. How would you connect with visitors? Explore the Sunshine City this season and share what you find!

Eligibility

 This contest is open to any Orillia and Lake Country resident who, at the time of submission: 
  • Is a permanent or temporary resident of one of Orillia and Lake Country's five municipalities: Orillia, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Townships of RamaraSevern or Oro-Medonte. The entrant may be required to provide proof of residency. 

  • Is aged 18 or older. 

  • Does not own or operate a professional video production company. 

  • Complies with all contest rules and requirements. 

Contest rules and requirements

 To be eligible for the Through Your Lens: Visit Orillia Fall Video Contest, contestants must agree to the following contest rules and requirements:
  • Only one submission is permitted per entrant. 
  • The submission must not include any copyrighted material, audio, or any third-party personal information. 
  • All footage must be original, created solely by the entrant, and filmed within the City of Orillia's boundaries.
  • Submissions must be thirty seconds in length, high resolution, and in landscape format (16:9 aspect ratio).
  • Entrants are required to supply and ensure consent forms are completed by all individuals recognizably shown within the video before the contestant submits their video. This rule is applicable to footage obtained in all private or public spaces, as well as entrants who include their own likeness.

  • Submissions must be suitable for viewing by all ages. Content may not depict scenes of violence, gore, offensive behaviour, or strong language.
  • All municipal, federal, and provincial laws must be followed during the process of filming.
  • Contestants must refrain from advertising or overtly featuring a particular business.
  • The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winning submissions will be required to provide all video and audio files to the City of Orillia.
  • By submitting to the Through Your Lens: Visit Orillia Fall Video Contest, entrants grant full creative rights to the City of Orillia to use, licence, edit, modify, duplicate and/or create derivative works from the submission. 
  • Failure to comply with all of the contest rules and requirements will result in an immediate disqualification.

Important dates

  • The contest will open for submissions on September 12, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).
  • The final day to submit will be December 5, 2024. The submission portal will close on this day at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). 
  • Adjudication will begin on December 6, 2024. 
  • The winner, 2nd and 3rd place finalists will be contacted in early 2025, with a public announcement to follow in preparation for the 2025 fall campaign.

All individuals recognizably shown within the video are required to complete a model consent form. Contestants are required to ensure these forms are completed prior to submitting to the contest.

How will the winners be decided?

Each submission will be judged on the following criteria to determine a score. Each criterion will have a weight of 10 points, and all submissions will be judged anonymously: 

  • Creativity and uniqueness 

  • Audience engagement 

  • Production quality 

  • Clarity of message (use of the "exploring fall in Orillia" theme)

How do I share my video with the judges?

Upload your video to a public video hosting website of your choice (such as YouTube or Vimeo). A valid, workable link must be provided when you complete your contest submission form. Once the contest submission form is completed, videos must remain unchanged and accessible until adjudication is complete.
