Whether you’re part of a peloton or a lone rider, finding the perfect balance between well-groomed cycling trails along with breathtaking scenery and amenities is a must.
The Orillia area is a well-known and favoured destination for cyclists with trails along the waterfront and through neighbourhoods of the city making a great day trip or weekend for the whole family. It’s also the perfect spot to begin your journey with paved and rail trails running to other communities in every direction.
Whether it’s flat and beginner-friendly you’re looking for, or hilly and challenging, Orillia has something for every cyclist and is a perfect basecamp for an overnight cycling getaway with plenty of places to stay throughout the city. Part of the Trans Canada Trail, the City’s Millennium Trail is a nine-kilometre paved route that follows the spectacular shorelines of Lake Couchiching through major parks such as the J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park, Centennial Park and Couchiching Beach Park. All or part of this route is perfect for a family day of biking. The trail connects with the Ramara Trail to the east and the Uhthoff Trail in Severn Township to the west if you want to venture outside city limits.
Perhaps you want to stay within Orillia’s borders and venture to treasured monuments and special sites by bike. The Leacock Museum on the shores of Lake Couchiching at Brewery Bay is on the Millennium Trail, and is the former summer home of Canadian humourist Stephen Leacock, and the place he penned his popular book, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town.
Looking for bike-friendly businesses to stop in on your journey? From charming coffee shops to pubs, the Sunshine City has more than 30 restaurants in its downtown core, where you can grab something to enjoy on your journey or stop in for a quick meal.
Orillia also has two bike stores offering everything you need, from new bikes to accessories and repairs. The Crank & Sprocket Bicycle Company will set you up with a new or rental bike, accessories, and if needed, repairs. The Bike Stop of Orillia also has new bikes and all the cycling accessories you can think of. Just need a tune up or a flat tire fixed? They do that too.
Before you head back to your accommodations and a good night’s sleep at the end of the day, be sure to treat yourself to an après-cycling meal at any of Orillia’s restaurants where you’ll find a plethora of culinary delights, from burgers to gourmet.
See you on the trails!
