The City of Orillia draws people from all over and for many reasons. Whether you’re here to try your luck at Casino Rama Resort, watching the kids’ play hockey at Rotary Place Arena, or on your way up or down Highway 11 to visit elsewhere, don’t miss out on the magnetism of this city.
Orillia has been known as “The Sunshine City” since it was incorporated in 1867 due in part to its beautiful lakes, beaches and parks, its proximity to the metropolis’ of the time and its popularity as the inspiration for the fictitious Town of Mariposa featured in renowned humourist (and summer resident) Stephen Leacock’s “Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town.” Orillia continues to attract thousands of visitors annually as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Mariposa, by the way, is Spanish for butterfly and you’ll see many of those on your visit to our fair city.
Those who grew up listening to the legendary music of another former resident (born and raised), Gordon Lightfoot, will want to witness Golden Leaves, the permanent, thirteen-foot-high bronze sculpture of the singing icon in J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park. The kids will have fun at Moose Beach with its sandy bottom, accessible playground and splashpad, and you’ll love the quiet, tree-lined walking trails along Lake Couchiching that ultimately lead to the main statue and bronze leaves at the furthest point.
Another way to get your steps in, while also checking out the unique shops of the city’s core, is to enjoy the free historical downtown audio walking tour before choosing a restaurant to lunch at. Don’t forget, a trip to Downtown Orillia is not complete without a visit to Mariposa Market for a specialty coffee and sweet treat to eat in or take home!
If you ever find yourself in the Sunshine City on a warm summer day, it’s always a good idea to stop by the renowned Couchiching Beach Park near the Port of Orillia in the downtown core. With only a bathing suit and a few bucks for lunch at French’s Hot Dog Stand (there’s a reason it’s been thriving for more than 100 years!), you can enjoy a simple, but memorable, afternoon at the beach with the kids.
Feel like getting on the water, but don’t have your SUP or kayak? Not to worry! There are rentals available at Tudhope Park and Couchiching Beach Park with everything you need from paddle to personal floating device. There is simply nothing better than enjoying the sights of Orillia while gliding along the shores of Lake Couchiching.
Visiting during the colder months? Lucky for you, Orillia is not just known for its summer activities. With widespread blue skies and sunshine dancing off the snow, there are plenty of trails for snowmobiling, fat biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. You can even rent everything you need to try ice fishing. Just remember to dress for the weather!
To get in a swim or workout in winter, visit the newest jewel in the city’s crown – the Orillia Recreation Centre, where you can buy a Fun Pass and try all of the services offered, including drop-in sports leagues.
No matter what season, or how long you’re staying, you can always find fun and feel welcome in Orillia.
