Water Meter and Usage

A water meter tracks water usage and ensures customers are being billed only for water that they use. You can usually find your water meter in your basement or in a utility room.

Monitor your water usage at home using the Water Usage Customer Portal.

Water meter maintenance

The water meter is owned and maintained by the City, while the property owner is responsible for protecting the meter from damage and ensuring it remains accessible.

If you have questions or issues with your meter or need to request a water shut‑off, you can submit a service request.

Water meters applications

New water meters or upgrading meter service sizes would require a new meter application. Approved trades and contractors can request an appointment by calling 705-326-4585. A water meter must be purchased prior to the issuance of any building permit.

Water usage at home

Property owners are responsible for the water they use in their home, including leaks, as well as the private service line and plumbing inside the property.

Checking for leaks

Monitor your water usage by using the Water Usage Customer Portal. Check around your home for wet spots, corrosion or pooling water, or you can turn off all water sources, record the meter reading, wait a few hours and check if there was a change. A change could mean there is a leak.

Water colour, taste, or odour changes

Dirty water can come from maintenance or construction in your area, run the cold water tap in a bathtub or sink for 5 to 10 minutes. If your water has an unusual taste or smell, pour water into a glass to determine if it is the water itself or a smell coming from your drain.

If discolouration persists or the water in a glass omits the smell, contact the City.
