Stormwater

Stormwater is water from rainfall, melted snow and ice that does not soak into the ground. This can create water streams and watercourses that flow along roads and in ditches channeled into city storm sewers, and natural areas.

Stormwater management

Stormwater Management is the planning for and controlling of stormwater runoff from precipitation and melted snow. This process also ensures the water safe before entering streams, rivers, wetlands, ponds, and lakes.

The City of Orillia's Comprehensive Stormwater Management Master Plan in accordance with the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) Guidelines for the Development and Implementation of Comprehensive Stormwater Management Master Plans in the Lake Simcoe Watershed and the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Process.

This master plan outlines characteristics of our watershed, defines the existing stormwater system, which serves the watershed, and makes recommendations on how to improve infrastructure within the City.

Protecting your property

To help reduce the effects from stormwater pooling and the risk of flooding:

  • Keep storm drains clear of debris, snow and ice
  • Clean gutters and eavestroughs regularly to prevent overflow

Be prepared in case of potential flooding, this can include applying weatherproof sealant, checking your sump pump, and more. Learn how you can be better prepared by visiting the Ontario government's flood webpage.
