Traffic and Safety

Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe. The City is responsible for traffic infrastructure and safety measures to help keep roads and crosswalks safe for drivers and pedestrians. The Traffic Calming Policy and the Transportation Master Plan support how our city moves and guides future decisions.

Traffic signals and intersections

Orillia operates over 40 signalized intersections. New traffic signals are assessed using Ontario Traffic Manual guidelines. Signals installed in unsuitable locations can disrupt traffic flow, distract drivers, and be ineffective.

Report a malfunctioning traffic signal

If a traffic light isn't working, contact the City to let staff know. If after-hours, call 705-326-4671.

Traffic circles

The neighbourhood traffic circle at the intersection of Forest Avenue South and James Street East is designed to help improve safety and calm traffic by reducing vehicle speeds and managing traffic flow through a circular intersection where drivers yield on entry. The MTO’s Driver's Handbook details how to properly navigate roundabouts for new drivers.

Traffic monitoring

The City uses radar speed signs to support traffic calming efforts, and to collect data such as the average speeds and traffic volume. These signs may be placed in a neighbourhood for 7-14 days, and then relocated to another area of the City.  Request traffic monitoring along a city road through the speed feedback sign deployment request form, or by emailing development services and engineering staff. The deployment areas are scheduled up to a year in advance, and are scheduled based on historical data, resident requests, and staff analysis.

Traffic documents for developers

If you're a developer looking to obtain traffic documents relating to your development, please complete the traffic information request form, email the completed form to development services and engineering staff.
