Active Transportation

Active transportation means using your own power like walking, biking, or rolling to get around. The City's Transportation Master Plan guides the creation of new opportunities to reduce reliance on motor vehicles for short trips, as well as enhance recreation and active enjoyment of Orillia’s outdoor spaces.

Encouraging active travel

There are many ways to engage in active transportation, whether it is walking to the bus stop or cycling to work or school.

Students can get involved through On the Move, a school travel initiative that encourages kids to be more active. Led by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, it provides tools for parents and teachers in partnership with local schools, boards, and communities.

Get involved

A former Active Transportation Committee developed a Pedestrian Charter which was adopted in principle by Council in 2018. You can get involved in active transportation by:

  • Walking

  • Cycling

  • Using a wheelchair

  • In-line skating

  • Skateboarding

  • Jogging / Hiking
