Waste Diversion Site (landfill)

Located at 100 Kitchener St, Orillia, ON L3V 6Z9 the Waste Diversion Site plays a key role in reducing landfill waste by diverting recyclable and reusable materials. The site offers approximately 15 diversion depots and programs, many of which are free or have reduced tipping fees compared to regular garbage disposal. To dispose of hazardous waste, visit the Household Hazardous Waste Depot to safely dispose of materials that should not be placed in curbside garbage.

Accepted materials and fees

Many diversion programs at the Waste Diversion Site are free or discounted compared to regular garbage disposal. Below is a summary of common materials and applicable fees. Tipping fees and sale of goods fees apply as outlined in the user fees

  • Green bin organics (from residents)
  • Leaf and yard waste (from residents)
  • Scrap metal
  • Tires (on or off rim) maximum of 10
  • Electronics
  • Household hazardous waste 
  • Household garbage in clear, tagged bags (that contains less than 10% divertible materials)

  • Regular household garbage
  • Garbage in black (opaque) bags
  • Building and demolition wood
  • Drywall and shingles
  • Street sweepings
  • Brush and tree wood
  • CFC appliances (e.g., refrigerators, freezers)
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Asphalt and concrete
  • Business' green bin organics, leaf and yard waste
  • Recycling box materials

  • Insulation and non-recyclable foam must be bagged
  • Difficult waste, fees applied when special handling/landfilling is required
  • Mixed waste, fees applied when divertible materials are not separated properly

To keep site visits quick and efficient, small, single-category loads under 100 kg can be dropped off for a flat rate of $20. Bring exact change to keep visits efficient.

Load limits are regulated under the Highway Traffic Act, vehicles must not exceed their registered gross vehicle weight (GVW). Overloaded vehicles will not be approved and may result in fines or demerit points.

Landfill Charge Accounts

Businesses with ongoing disposal needs can apply for a Waste Diversion Site Charge Account to enable monthly billing.

Apply by completing the Waste Diversion Site Credit Application Form and emailing the completed form to waste management staff. Applications are typically processed within one week.

Township residents

Residents of Severn, Oro-Medonte, and Ramara Townships may drop off household hazardous waste and electronics for free at Orillia’s Waste Diversion Site. No other disposal or diversion program access is permitted.

Household Hazardous Waste Depot

Orillia’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot, located within the Waste Diversion Site, allows residents to safely dispose of materials that should not be placed in the regular curbside waste. Improper disposal of hazardous waste can contaminate soil, groundwater, and the environment.

When planning to drop off materials:

  • Keep materials in their original containers with labels intact.
  • Do not mix products together.
  • Ensure containers are tightly sealed and placed in a sturdy box or bin for transport.
  • When possible, sort items by category (paints, batteries, oils, etc.) for quicker drop-off.

Batteries

  • Single-use (alkaline, lithium, coin-cell, etc.)
  • Rechargeable (Ni-Cd, NiMH, Li-ion, lead acid, etc.)

Paints, stains and solvents

  • Latex and oil-based paint (with original labels)
  • Aerosols, stains, thinners, turpentine, mineral spirits

Automotive and outdoor products

  • Motor oil and oil filters
  • Gasoline and antifreeze
  • Propane cylinders (up to 20 lb BBQ size)
  • Fertilizers and pesticides

Household products

  • Cleaning solutions, bleach, degreasers, detergents
  • Pool and spa chemicals
  • Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes
  • Mercury-containing items (e.g., thermometers)

  • Empty containers (place in blue box if recyclable)
  • Ammunition, fireworks, or explosives
  • Radioactive materials (including smoke detectors)
  • Biomedical or pharmaceutical waste (return to your pharmacy)
  • Business or industrial waste
