Curbside Collection

The City picks up curbside garbage and organics across the community. Learn about garbage, green bin, yard waste, as well as your collection zone and schedule. Residential recycling across Ontario is managed by Circular Materials.

Curbside waste collection

Place garbage and organics waste at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.

Garbage

Garbage is collected every other week. Garbage must be placed in clear garbage bags or in approved rigid containers. A valid garbage tag must be attached to each bag or to the top item if loose in a container. Search for your collection zone and schedule, or use the what goes where tool to learn what can go in the garbage.

Garbage bag and container rules

  • The weight limit for each bag or container is 20 kg (44 lbs), anything over will not be collected.
  • The City is on a clear garbage bag program. Up to two small privacy bags can be used inside each clear bag to conceal personal waste.
  • Rigid containers are allowed if they are 133 L (35 gallons) or smaller. Containers larger than 133 L are considered storage bins, any garbage bags placed inside still require a garbage tag to be attached.
  • Bags or containers with more than 10% organics or recycling will not be collected.

Garbage tags

All accepted garbage bags and containers placed for curbside collection require a full pink City of Orillia garbage tag. New tags are mailed out annually in June, with delivery expected by July 1. If you did not receive your annual garbage tags, contact the City. Clear bags of diapers do not require a City of Orillia garbage tag.

Additional tags can be purchased in lots of 5 for $15.00 at the City Centre (50 Andrew Street South, Orillia, ON  L3V 7T5) or at the Waste Diversion Site (100 Kitchener St, Orillia, ON L3V 6Z9). You can also purchase garbage tags online (convenience fee applies).

Tags are also sold at the following locations:

  • Zehr’s Markets (285 Coldwater Rd.)
  • Metro Food Stores (70 Front St. N.)
  • Memorial Pharmasave (200 Memorial Ave)
  • Orillia Home Hardware (5 King St.)
  • Pharma Plus Drugmart (58 Mississaga St. E.)

Garbage in clear garbage bags: Fold the full tag around the top of the bag where it is tied, forming a “flag.”

Garbage in loose in rigid containers: Place the full tag on the top item inside the container (not on the lid).

Business recycling

Businesses in Orillia must be registered to receive curbside recycling collection. Collection takes place on a Tuesday to Thursday schedule, with no holiday delays for business recycling.

The provincial recycling program does not include business recycling. Business recycling is provided under a separate City-managed collection contract, and only registered locations will be serviced, regardless of whether City-issued carts or recycling bins are currently used.
