Construction Projects

City construction projects take place throughout the year to better serve Orillia.  This includes neighbourhood reconstruction projects, road widening, resurfacing, sidewalk construction or replacement, intersection improvements or multi-year transportation improvement projects.

The City highlights the projects that are occurring this year. Subscribe to City notices for service interruptions or closures.

Project details

The Asphalt Resurfacing Program is applied to roads that have deteriorated, but do not yet require full reconstruction. The annual resurfacing program is determined by selecting the roads with the worst surface condition rating, but moderate to good structural ratings. The intent is to extend the life of the roadway and improve the ride rating until replacement. Priority is given to Arterial Roads, then Collector Roads, then Local Roads.

Project details

The Municipal Act, 2001, Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways requires that municipalities inspect sidewalks once per year to check surface condition. The City uses digital scans to perform a complete condition data gathering and assessment of the entire City-owned sidewalk network. Based on these inspections, a condition rating is assigned to a City sidewalk that is considered in the recommendation of potential sidewalks as replacement projects.

Sidewalk Prioritization Policy

Orillia’s Sidewalk Replacement and Infill Policy helps decide where new sidewalks are needed and which old ones should be fixed first. The program focuses on safety, accessibility, and making it easier for people to walk around the city. It looks at things like sidewalk condition, nearby schools and transit stops, and gaps in the sidewalk network. This clear and fair approach helps improve walkability for everyone in the community.
