Getting married?

A marriage licence is valid for 90 days and is valid for use anywhere within Ontario.

The City of Orillia does not offer civil marriage ceremonies. 

How to apply

Marriage licences can only be issued to the applicant and/or joint applicant. 

An appointment must be booked with City staff to process the application.

Fill out the online Marriage Licence Application Form and then book an appointment for processing during office hours (8 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday). Applications will not be processed after 4:30 p.m.

Application requirements

The Marriage Licence fee is outlined in Chapter 451 of the City of Orillia Municipal Code - User Fees - General Administration. The fee must be paid by cash or debit at time of issue.

 

You must be at least 18 years of age to be married in Ontario by licence or under the authority of the publication of banns without authorization or parental consent.

Original identification for both applicants is required. Two (2) pieces of identification must be shown for each party confirming name, birth date and signature.  

Only one person needs to pick up the licence but must bring two pieces of ID for each person (totaling four pieces of ID).

Examples of government-issued identification include:

  • Valid Passport
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
  • Valid Ontario Photo Card
  • Birth Certificate (with any change of name certificates)
  • Record of Immigrant Landing
  • Permanent Residence Card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card

 Applicants who are divorced must provide:

  • A divorce certificate, the final decree (divorce or annulment) or the final judgment (divorce or annulment).
  • A divorce judgement or divorce order are not accepted.
  • For divorces outside of Canada, refer to the Authorization Section on the Requirements Respecting Marriage in Ontario.

Applicants who are widowed must provide:

  • A death certificate, Funeral Director's Statement of Death or Court order.
